Meeting No. 144

Tuesday, May 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Chuck Cadman, Aileen Carroll, Derek Lee, John Maloney, John McKay and Jacques Saada.

Acting Member present: Gary Pilliterri for Ivan Grose.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Marilyn Pilon, Researcher.

Witness(es): From the Department of Justice: Yvan Roy, Senior General Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section; Catherine Kane, Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3) and the Order of Reference dated Tuesday, April 20, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-79, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (victims of crime) and another Act in consequence. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Wednesday, April 21, 1999, Meeting No. 133)

The Committee proceeded to Clause-by-Clause consideration of the Bill.

The Chair called Clause 1.

Clause 1 carried.

The witnesses answered questions on Clause 2.

After debate, Clause 2 carried.

Clauses 3 to 19 inclusive carried.

Clauses 20 to 22 carried on division.

Clauses 23 to 33 inclusive carried.

At 4:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
