Thursday, April 22, 1999

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 11:55 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Chuck Cadman, Aileen Carroll, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, Peter Mancini, John McKay, John Reynolds and Jacques Saada.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Marilyn Pilon, Researcher.

Appearing:: The Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Witness(es): From the Department of Justice: Catherine Kane, Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section; Yvan Roy, Senior General Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(1) and the Order of Reference dated Tuesday, April 20, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-79, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (victims of crime) and another Act in consequence. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Wednesday, April 21, 1999, Meeting No. 133)

The Minister made an opening statement, and along with Catherine Kane and Yvan Roy, answered questions.

At 1:12 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
