Meeting No. 102

Tuesday, November 24, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:16 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Chuck Cadman, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, John McKay and Jacques Saada.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst and Mary Hurley, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Interim Commissioner of Nunavut: Nora Sanders, Deputy Minister of Justice designate; Rebecca Williams, Assistant Deputy Minister of Justice designate; From the Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.: Allan S. Maclure, Counsel; Leena Evic-Twerdin, Advisor, Policy and Programme.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, October 29, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-57, An Act to amend the Nunavut Act with respect to the Nunavut Court of Justice and to amend other Acts in consequence. (See Minutes of Proceeding, Thursday, November 19, 1998, Meeting No. 100).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
