Standing Committee on Industry
Industry Committee to examine effects of Year 2000 Bug on embedded chips.
OTTAWA 23 March 1998
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry will be meeting representatives of the embedded electronic chip industry on Tuesday March 24, 1998 to examine their possible failure as a consequence of the year 2000 bug.
Appearing before the committee are Jennifer McNeill, President of Cipher Systems; Ian Nunn (Health Canada) and Ted Eedson (Public Works Canada), the volunteer Co-chairs of the Interdepartmental Working Group's Embedded Systems Sub-Committee.
Embedded chips contain pre-programmed instructions to perform control, protection and monitoring tasks. They are used in factory equipment, office machines, and in home appliances.
The chips uninterrupted operation is of the utmost concern. It has been pointed out that some of the chips will not roll over the year digits properly in the year 2000. As a result they will think that the date is the year 1900 and will shut down for safety reasons, believing that they have been properly maintained.
The meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday 24 March 1998 in Room 362-E, in the East Block building of the House of Commons.
