Standing Committee on Industry

Industry Committee to meet with Canadian Telecommunications Carriers, Manufacturers and Business Users about Year 2000 Preparedness.

OTTAWA 13 March 1998 - The House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry will be meeting with representatives of Bell Canada, Nortel, and the CRTC. Bell Canada is a major Canadian carrier and is intending to spend $450 M to fix the Year 2000 problem. Nortel is a leading Canadian manufacturer of telecommunications equipment with a substantial export performance. The CRTC is the federal regulator of telecommunications in Canada. Telecommunications are a key part of Canada's economic and social infrastructure, and their interrupted operation is of the utmost importance to the health, safety and economic well-being of Canadians.

The meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday 17 March 1998 in Room 209, the West Block. The Year 2000 problem arises from the last two digits of year number changing over from '99 to '00. Many older computer systems, programs and electronic devices mistakenly think the year is 1900 with potentially disastrous consequences.
