Meeting No. 98

Thursday, March 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson and John Craig, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association Inc.: Mark Daniels, President; Jean-Pierre Bernier, Vice-President and General Counsel; Charles Black, Senior Advisor, Insurance Operations. From the "Confédération des syndicats nationaux": Nicole Cousineau, Secretary General; Michel Lessard, Treasurer and Member of the Executive Committee; Anne Pineau, Lawyer and Member of Legal Department.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances, by providing for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions and by amending the Canada Evidence Act, the Statutory Instruments Act and the Statute Revision Act.

Mark Daniels, Charles Black and Jean-Pierre Bernier each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:41 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:43 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Michel Lessard and Anne Pineau each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:26 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
