Meeting No. 95

Tuesday, March 9, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Rahim Jaffer, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From Committees and Legislative Services: Jacques Lahaie, Legislative Clerk. From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson and John Craig, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From TELUS Corporation: Lorna Higdon-Norrie, Vice President, Government and Community Affairs; John Makaryshyn, Senior Advisor, Industry Policy. From Bell Canada: Bernard A. Courtois, Chief Regulatory Officer; Suzanne L. Morin, Senior Counsel.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances, by providing for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions and by amending the Canada Evidence Act, the Statutory Instruments Act and the Statute Revision Act.

Lorna Higdon-Norrie made an opening statement and with the witness answered questions.

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Bernard Courtois made and opening statement and with the witness answered questions.

At 5:14 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
