Meeting No. 86

Wednesday, February 10, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 307, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Daniel Brassard, Research Officer; Antony Jackson.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Standards Association: Ellen Pekilis, Project Manager; Jim Savary, Department of Economics; Gérald Lavallée, Executive Director; Suzanne Morin, Canadian representative on the International Standards Organization (ISO) ad hoc Privacy Group and Member of the CSA Technical Privacy Committee.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances, by providing for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions and by amending the Canada Evidence Act, the Statutory Instruments Act and the Statute Revision Act.

Jim Savary and Suzanne Morin each made an opening statement, and with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:41 p.m., the Committee proceeded to the consideration of its future business.

Walt Lastewka moved, - That the Standing Committee on Industry travel to Montreal on Monday, March 22, 1999 for the purpose of visiting the Canadian Space Agency.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

At 4:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
