Meeting No. 61

Tuesday, October 20, 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd, Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From Committees and Legislative Services: Richard Dupuis, Legislative Clerk. From the Library of Parliament: Nathalie Pothier and Antony Jackson, Research Officers.

Witnesses:From the As Individual: Dr. Roy Norton, Public Policy Consultant; From the Fraser Institute: Fazil Milhar, Director of Regulatory Studies; Jason Clemens, Policy Analyst; From Victoria Woolen Mill: Greg Smith, Partner.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, October 6, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-53, An Act to increase the availability of financing for the establishment, expansion, modernization and improvement of small businesses. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, October 7th, 1998, Meeting No. 60)

On Clause 1

Dr. Roy Norton and Jason Clemens and Fazil Milhar, from the Fraser Institute, each made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:30 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:34 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

Greg Smith, from the Victoria Woollen Mill, made statement and answered questions.

At 5:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
