MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 53)

Tuesday, June 16th, 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met in a televised session at 3:20 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 253-D of the Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: : Nathalie Pothier, Research Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a study on Information Technology: Preparedness for year 2000.

Witnesses: From the Insurance Bureau of Canada: Alex Kennedy, Executive Vice-President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary; Mark Yakabuski, Director, Government Relations; Wayne Thorpe, Vice-President, Commercial Lines Underwriting, The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company.

Alex Kennedy made a statement and with the other witnesses from the Insurance Bureau, answered questions.

At 4:18 o’clock p.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 4:30 o’clock p.m. the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on a document entitled "Sustaining Canada as an Innovative Society: An Action Agenda".

Witnesses: From the Treasury Board Secretariat: Alan Nymark, Associate Deputy Minister and Co-Chair of the Policy Research Committee, Health Canada; From Industry Canada: Dr. Serge Nadeau, Director, Micro-Economic Analysis Directorate; Dr. Surendra Gera, Senior Policy and Research Advisor, Micro-Economic Policy Analysis Branch.

Alan Nymark and Serge Nadeau each made a statement and, with the other witness from Industry Canada, answered questions.

At 6:08 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
