Tuesday, May 12, 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met in a televised session at 3:33 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 253-D of the Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Bonnie Brown, Antoine Dubé, Tony Ianno, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: : David Johansen, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Office Machine Dealers Association: Don Vickery, Executive Director. From the Canadian Direct Marketing Association: John Gustavson, President and CEO, Bonnie Wasser, Director, Councils and Education. From the Better Business Bureau: Leslie King, Chairman of the Committee of Managers and Executive Director. From the Canadian Survey Research Council: Ivor Thompson, President. From the Visa Canada Association: Al Finn, Manager, Risk Management and Security. From the Ontario Provincial Police: Barry Elliott, Detective Staff Sergeant, Coordinator, Project PhoneBusters.

Telemarketing Forum.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, March 17, 1998, consideration of Bill C-20, An Act to amend the Competition Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts.

Don Vickery, John Gustavson, Leslie King, Ivor Thompson, Al Finn and Barry Elliot each made a statement and answered questions.

 

 

At 4:58 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
