Wednesday, May 6, 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:37 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Bonnie Brown, Tony Ianno, Jim Jones, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: : Daniel Brassard, Antony Jackson, David Johansen and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the University of B.C.: Prof. W.T. Stanbury, Professor, Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration; From the Retail Council of Canada: Peter Woolford, Vice-President, Policy; From Ford Canada Ltd.: Norman J. Stewart, Vice-President, Government Relations and General Counsel; From the Consumers' Association of Canada: Marnie McCall, Executive Director, Policy Research.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, March 17, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-20, An Act to amend the Competition Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts. (See Minutes of Proceedings of March 31, 1998, Meeting No. 29)

Marnie McCall, W.T. Stanbury, Peter Woolford and Norman Stewart each made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:27 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
