Tuesday, May 5, 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:06 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Jacques Saada for Bonnie Brown.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: : Daniel Brassard, Antony Jackson and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the National Biotechnology Advisory Committee: Graham Strachan, President and CEO, Allelix Biopharmaceuticals Inc., Richard Glickman, President and CEO, StressGen Biotechnologies Corp., Dr. Jim Friesen, Professor and Chair, Banting and Best Institute, University of Toronto, Brian Gray, Partner, Blake, Cassels & Graydon, Dr. Edna Einsedel, Professor, University of Calgary, Dr. Michel Chrétien, Scientific Director and CEO, LOEB Institute, Ottawa Civic Hospital, Suzanne Hendricks, President, National Institute of Nutrition.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a study on a document entitled "Leading in the next millennium".

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

At 10:58 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
