MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 35)

Tuesday, 28 April 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:29 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 237–C, Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Tony Ianno, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: André Harvey for Jim Jones.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Brassard, Antony Jackson and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

A. Pursuant to Order of Reference of the House dated February 26, 1998, the Committee proceeded to study the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120.

Appearing: The Hon. Martin Cauchon, Secretary of State for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec.

Witnesses: From the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec: Renaud Caron, Deputy Minister; Jocelyn Jacques, Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategy and Liaison; Guy McKenzie, Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations; Pierre Bordeleau, Director General, Resources Management.

The Hon. Martin Cauchon made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:36 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:45 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

B. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consideration of draft recommendations of its study on Information Technology: Preparedness for Year 2000.

The Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee discussed the draft recommendations.

At 5:38 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
