Thursday, 23 April 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met in a televised session at 9:07 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 253–D, Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Tony Ianno, Jim Jones, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Steve Mahoney for Bonnie Brown.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Brassard, Antony Jackson and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency: The Hon. Fred Mifflin,
Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State.

A. Pursuant to Order of Reference of the House dated February 26, 1998, the Committee proceeded to study the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120.

The Hon. Fred Muffin made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:07 o'clock a.m.m, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:13 o'clock a.m., the sitting resumed.

Witnesses: From General Motors of Canada Ltd.: Tayce Wakefield, Vice-President, Corporate Affairs; Roy Campbell, GMCL Information Officer, Information Systems and Services; Doug Potier, Common Systems Manager, Information Systems and Services. From Ford Canada: Maureen Trenkler, Technical System Manager, Management Information Systems; Michael S. Sheridan, Director, Government Relations. From Chrysler Canada: Othmar M. Stein, Vice President, Government/Public Affairs; Roger K. Buck, Manager Year2000, Information Services; Bob Renaud, Vice-President, Parts, Service and Engineering. From Toyota Canada Inc.: Brian R. Mason, National Manager, Corporate Systems.

B. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a study on Information Technology: Preparedness for Year 2000.

Roy Campbell from General Motors of Canada Ltd., Maureen Trenkler from Ford Canada Ltd., Bob Renaud from Chrysler Canada and Brian R. Mason from Toyota Canada each made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:46 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
