Meeting No. 126

Tuesday, May 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Rahim Jaffer, Marlene Jennings, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Dr. Thomas A. Brzustowski, President. From the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada: Marcel Lauzière, Director of the Corporate Innovation and Liaison Division. From the Medical Research Council of Canada: Marc LePage, Director of Business Development. From the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada: Robert J. Giroux, President; John C. Service, Ph.D., President, Canadian Consortium for Research; Louise Robert, Executive Director, Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada; Rubina Ramji, Chairperson, Canadian Graduate Council.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on a document entitled "Sustaining Canada as an Innovative Society: An Action Agenda".

Dr. Thomas Brzustowski, Marcel Lauzière and Marc LePage each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:43 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Robert Giroux and Rubina Ramji each made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

At 11:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
