Meeting No. 120

Thursday, May 6, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Darryl Stinson for Rahim Jaffer.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Nathalie Pothier and Antony Jackson, Research Officers.

Appearing: From Western Economic Diversification Canada: The Honourable Ronald Duhamel, Secretary of State, (Science, Research and Development) Western Economic Diversification Canada.

Witnesses: From Western Economic Diversification Canada: Onyssia J. Lennie; Judy Ferguson; Bernard Ouellet. From Industry Canada: Dr. Serge Nadeau, Director, Micro-Economic Analysis Directorate. From Statistics Canada: Dr. John Baldwin, Director, Micro Economic Studies and Analysis.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated March 1st, 1999, the Committee considered the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000, INDUSTRY, Votes 115 and 120.

By unanimous consent the Chair called Votes 115 and 120 under INDUSTRY.

The Honourable Ron Duhamel made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

Votes 115 and 120 were allowed to stand.

At 10:02 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:09 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 10:09 a.m., pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of a study on Productivity, Innovation and Competitiveness.

Dr. John Baldwin made an opening statement and answered questions.

Dr. Serge Nadeau made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
