Tuesday, May 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Paul Forseth for Rahim Jaffer, Jason Kenney for Eric Lowther.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nathalie Pothier and Antony Jackson, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the Department of Industry: The Hon. John Manley, Minister of Industry. From Western Economic Diversification Canada: The Hon. Ronald Duhamel, Secretary of State, (Science, Research and Development) Western Economic Diversification Canada.

Witnesses: From Industry Canada: Mary Zamparo, Corporate Comptroller; Andreï Sulzenko, Assistant Deputy Minister, Industry and Science Policy; Konrad von Finckenstein, Director Investigation and Research, Competition Bureau.

Pursuant to Order of Reference of the House dated March 1st, 1999, Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000, INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10 and L15.

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 1, 5, L10 and L15 under INDUSTRY.

The Minister the Honourable John Manley, made an opening statement and with the witnesses, answered questions.

Votes 1, 5, L10 and L15 were allowed to stand.

At 5:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
