Wednesday, April 21, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met in a televised session at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Stan Keyes, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Rob Anders for Rahim Jaffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Daniel Brassard and Antony Jackson, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From Biotechnology Research: Dr. Barry D. McLennan, Chair, Coalition for Biomedical and Health Research; Dr. Paul T. Hough, Vice-President, BioteCanada; Dr. Thomas J. Hudson, Assistant Professor, Departments of Medicine and Human Genetics, McGill University and Assistant Director, Centre for Genome Research, Whitehead Institute / MIT; Dr. Jim Friesen, Professor and Chair, Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. From Arctic Research: Bonni Hrycyk, Director, Polar Continental Shelf Project, Natural Resources Canada; Dr. Peter Johnson, President, Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies and Vice Chair, Canadian Polar Commission.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on a document entitled "Sustaining Canada as an Innovative Society: An Action Agenda".

Dr. Barry McLennan, Dr. Paul Hough, Dr. Tom Hudson and Dr. Jim Friesen each made an opening statement and answered questions.

Bonni Hrycyk and Dr. Peter Johnson each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
