Meeting No. 106

Wednesday, March 24, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Dave Chatters for Rahim Jaffer, John Solomon for Chris Axworthy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson and David Johansen, Research Officers.

Witnesses: As Individual: Dan McTeague, Member of Parliament; Michael Kelen, Barrister and Solicitor. From the Competition Bureau: Harry Chandler, Deputy Commissioner of Competition Criminal Matters; Don Mercer, Head, Amendments Unit; Marcel Morin, Commerce Officer, Amendments Unit; Sandra Fraser, General Counsel, Competition and Consumer Law Division; Richard Taylor, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, October 20, 1998, consideration of Bill C-235, An Act to amend the Competition Act (protection of those who purchase products from vertically integrated suppliers who compete with them at retail).

The Chair called Clause 1.

Dan McTeague and Michael Kelen each made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

Harry Chandler made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
