Thursday, March 18, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Eugène Bellemare, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Walt Lastewka, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Val Meredith for Rahim Jaffer and Judy Wasylycia-Leis for Chris Axworthy.

Other Member present: Paul Forseth.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances, by providing for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions and by amending the Canada Evidence Act, the Statutory Instruments Act and the Statute Revision Act.

Dr. Richard Speers, Michael McBane, Noëlle-Dominique Willems, Dr. John Millar, Dr. Susan Hutchinson and Gilbert Sharpe each made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

At 11:30 a.m., Mr. Bellemare took the Chair.

At 11:32 a.m., Ms. Whelan took the Chair.

At 11:35 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:44 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Bruce Phillips made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 1:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
