Thursday, March 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Honourable Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Charlie Penson, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller.

Acting Member present: Odina Desrochers for Daniel Turp.

Associate Members present: Sarmite Bulte, Murray Calder, Stéphan Tremblay.

Senators present: Hon. Len Gustafson, Hon. Nick Taylor, Hon. Eugene Whelan.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras; James Lee; Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers; Chris Maule and Roy Hines, Consultants.

Roundtable Participants: From the Canadian Alliance of Agri-Food Exporters: Patty Townsend, Manager, Communications and Public Affairs. From the Canadian Federation of Agriculture: Robert Friesen, President. From the Dairy Farmers of Canada: John Core, First Vice-President; Yves Leduc, Assistant Director, International Trade. From the «Union des producteurs agricoles du Québec»: Yvon Proulx, Chief Economist. From the Centre for Trade Policy and Law: William M. Miner, Senior Associate.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73.)

Robert Friesen, Edouard Asnong, John Core, Yvon Proulx and William Miner each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
