Meeting No. 90

Thursday, February 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, The Honourable Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Charlie Penson, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras, Gerald Schmitz; Chris Maule and Roy Hines, Consultants.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Paul Martin, Acting Director, Multilateral Trade Policy Division, Multilateral Trade Policy Division, Market and Industry Services Branch. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: John Gero, Director General, Trade Policy Bureau II, Services, Investment and Intellectual Property; Claude Carrière, Director, Tariffs and Market Access Division. From Industry Canada: Robert Ready, Director, International Investment Services. From Department of Finance: Gilles Gauthier, Acting Chief, Trade Services and Investment.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, February 4, 1999, Meeting no. 87.)

It was agreed, --That a meeting of the Committee be convened on March 10, 1999 at 3:30 p.m.

Paul Martin made an opening statement and, along with Claude Carrière, answered questions.

John Gero made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
