Tuesday, February 9, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Maud Debien, The Honourable Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bob Mills, Bernard Patry, Charlie Penson, Julian Reed, Bob Speller.

Acting Member present: Hélène Alarie for Benoît Sauvageau.

Associate Member present: Murray Calder.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras, Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers; Chris Maule and Roy Hines, Consultants.

Appearing: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: The Hon. Sergio Marchi, Minister for International Trade.

Witnesses:From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Jonathan Fried, Assistant Deputy Minister for Trade and Economic Policy; John Klassen, Director General, General Trade Policy Bureau; Terry Collins-Williams, Director, International Trade Policy Division.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73.)

The Minister made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:10, John Klassen made an opening statement and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
