MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 81

Tuesday, November 24, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:10 a.m. o'clock this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, The Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bob Mills, Bernard Patry, Jerry Pickard, Julian Reed, Svend Robinson, Benoît Sauvageau, Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee; Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers. From the Translation Bureau, Parliamentary Documents, Public Works and Government Services Canada: Michel Boissonneault, Translator.

The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

It was agreed, --That the Committee invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs to appear before it to discuss the Performance Report of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade 1997-1998.

At 9:12 a.m. o'clock, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued to examine Canada's policy on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament. (See Minutes of Proceedings of February 3, 1998, Meeting No. 22.)

The Committee resumed its examination of a draft report.

At 10:19 a.m. o'clock, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:25 a.m. o'clock, the sitting was resumed in camera.

It was agreed, --That the draft report as amended be adopted as the Seventh Report of the Committee.

It was agreed, --That the Committee print, in a bilingual format, 2,000 copies of its report.

It was agreed, --That pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to this report.

It was agreed, --That the Chair be authorized to make such typographical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report to the House.

It was agreed, --That the Chair be authorized to present the report to the House on Wednesday, December 9, 1998.

At 12:00 p.m. o'clock, the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
