Meeting No. 68

Monday, September 28, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 257, East Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maud Debien, Raymonde Folco, Bill Graham, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Daniel Turp.

Associate Member present: Keith Martin.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee; Gerry Schmitz, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the From the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Canada: Pietro Antonio Di Prima, President; José H. G. Happart, Vice-President; Luigi Moretti, (Italy, Lega Nord); Daniel Varela Suanzes-Carpegna, (Spain, Partido Popular); Jup Weber, (Luxembourh, Les Verts); Anthony Joseph Wilson, (United Kingdom, Labour Party).

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to meet with a delegation from the European Parliament.

Bob Mills gave notice of a motion which is as follows:

Pursuant to section 18 of the Constitution Act, section 4 of the Parliament of Canada Act and section 108(1)(a) of the Standing Orders, this committee study and report back to the House on the events surrounding the suppression of a legal protest of the APEC conference in Vancouver in 1997 and that the following people be called before this committee as witnesses: The Right Honourable Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, Mr. Jean Pelletier (Chief of Staff) and Mr. Jean Carle (Former Director of Operations within the PMO).

Pietro Antonio Di Prima made an opening statement and, with other members of the delegation, answered questions.

At 5:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
