MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 62

THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 11:30 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 209 of the West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Raymonde Folco, Bill Graham, Gurmant Grewal, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Svend Robinson, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Witnesses: Canadian Delegation of Parliamentarians to Chiapas: David Iftody, M.P. (Provencher); Dick Proctor, M.P. (Palliser); Jacques Saada, M.P. (Brossard-La Prairie); Diane St-Jacques, M.P. (Shefford); Daniel Turp, M.P. (Beauharnois-Salaberry).

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to examine the situation in Chiapas, Mexico.

Jacques Saada, M.P., Daniel Turp, M.P., Dick Proctor M.P. and Diane St-Jacques, M.P. each made an opening statement and, with David Iftody, M.P., answered questions.

Gurmant Grewal moved, --That pursuant to Standing Order 81(7) and 81(8), the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee shall consider and report to the House the expenditure plans and priorities in future fiscal years of the Department of Foreign Affairs with regard to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and its assistance programs to India and Pakistan in light of the recent nuclear testing performed by both countries.

It was agreed, --That the motion be stood until the next meeting of the Committee.

At 12:38 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
