MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 60

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in camera at 3:30 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 307 of the West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Gurmant Grewal, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of Canada’s policy on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament.

The Committee proceeded to examine an Options Paper.

It was agreed, --That the Chair be authorized to engage the services of an editor to edit the French text of the Committee’s draft report on nuclear disarmament prior to its distribution to Members of the Committee.

Pursuant to a resolution of the Committee of Thursday, February 26, 1998, Colleen Beaumier gave notice of a motion which is as follows:

That the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade urge the Canadian Government to consider the advisability of providing financial support for programmes designed to promote the peaceful transition to democracy in Burma; that further, the Canadian Government continue to support and enhance its financial assistance to Canadian NGOs providing services to refugees from Burma and internally displaced persons in Burma; and that Canada monitor and promote the interests, security and well-being of Burmese refugees in Thailand, Bangladesh and India.

At 4:37 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
