MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 57

TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 9:09 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 253-D of the Centre Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Raymonde Folco, Bill Graham, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Members present: Monique Guay for Benoît Sauvageau.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Equatorian People of the Sudan: Prince Marciano Luwala-Eli, Custodian. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Sandelle Scrimshaw, Director General, Africa Bureau. From the Canadian International Development Agency: Don McMaster, Director General, Eastern Africa and the Horn Program. From the Inter-Church Coalition on Africa: Garry Kenny. From Roll'n Oilfield Industries Inc. (Red Deer): Ron Robotham. As Individual: Mel Middleton.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to examine the situation in Sudan.

Sandelle Scrimshaw, Prince Marciano Luwala-Eli, Garry Kenny, Ron Robotham and Mel Middleton each made an opening statement and, with Don McMaster, answered questions.

At 11:07 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
