Meeting No. 54

TUESDAY, MAY 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:37 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 209 of the West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Raymonde Folco, Bill Graham, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Denis Paradis, Benoît Sauvageau, Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Appearing: Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Paul Heinbecker, Assistant Deputy Minister, Global and Security Policy; Ralph Lysyshyn, Director General, International Security Bureau and Peter Walker, High Commisioner of Canada to India.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of Canada’s policy on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament and commenced its examination of the issue of nuclear weapons test explosions in India.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:05 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
