Meeting No. 49

THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:35 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 308 of the West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Raymonde Folco, Bill Graham, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Daniel Turp.

Acting Members present: Gilles Perron for Benoît Sauvageau; Bill Blaikie for Svend Robinson.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz and James Lee, Research Officers.

Appearing: Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Don Campbell, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs; Lucie Edwards, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), and the Orders of the House of February 26, 1998 and March 25, 1998, the Committee proceeded to examine the Main Estimates 1998-1999: Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, L30, L35, 40 and 45 under Foreign Affairs, and the Report on Plans and Priorities for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Sessional Paper no. 8520-361-113).

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Vote 1.

The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy made a statement and, with the departmental officials, answered questions.

At 5:25 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
