Meeting No. 31

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 10:48 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 209 of the West Block, the Vice-Chair, Colleen Beaumier, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Raymonde Folco, Gurmant Grewal, Ted McWhinney, Denis Paradis, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Member present: Ivan Grosse for John Cannis.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Claude Laverdure, Assistant Deputy Minister, Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Special Envoy to Algeria.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of the situation in Algeria.

Claude Laverdure made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:08 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
