MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 24

 

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1998

 

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:10 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 371 of the West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Raymonde Folco, Gurmant Grewal, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Denis Paradis, Julian Reed, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

 

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Yves LeBouthillier, Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa; Peggy Mason, Former Ambassador for Disarmament and Representative of the Canadian Council for International Peace and Security; Paul Buteux, Director, Centre for Defence and Security Studies, University of Manitoba.

 

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its study of Canada’s policy on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament.

 

The witnesses each made an opening statement and answered questions.

 

The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

 

After debate it was agreed by a show of hands, --That in relation to its study of Canada’s policy on non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament, the Committee receive evidence in camera from officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Department of National Defence and Veterans Affais at its meeting of Thursday, February 12, 1998.

 

At 11:13 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned until later this day.
