Meeting No. 140

Thursday, May 27, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:13 a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Colleen Beaumier, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, The Hon. Sheila Finestone, Bernard Patry, Jerry Pickard, Julian Reed and Benoît Sauvageau.

Acting Members present: Marc Assad for Bill Graham, Mac Harb for Sarkis Assadourian, Keith Martin for Bob Mills.

Witnesses: As individuals: Honourable Amine Gemayel, Former-President of Lebanon; George Karam, President, National Council of WLCU; Joseph Chami, Counsel, Toufic Soyad.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to meet with the Honourable Amine Gemayel.

The Honourable Amine Gemayel made an opening statement and answered questions.

Bernard Patry gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee urge the Government of Canada to facilitate the restoration of Lebanese sovereignty to be achieved through the withdrawal of all non-Lebanese forces from its territory allowing therefore the people of Lebanon the right of self-determination mainly because the fate of the States and people of the region will be decided upon with the peace negotiation process.

At 10:37 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
