Tuesday, May 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met jointly with the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs at 3:22 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, Hec Clouthier, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, John Cannis, The Hon. Sheila Finestone and Julian Reed.

Acting Member present: Paul Crête for Daniel Turp.

Associate Member present: Murray Calder.

Members of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs present: Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Gordon Earle, Peter Goldring and Ghislain Lebel.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Corinne McDonald, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Jim Wright, Director General for Central East and South Europe. From the Department of National Defence: Lt-Gen Raymond R. Henault, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, OP ABACUS. From the Canadian International Development Agency: Hunter McGill, Director General, International Humanitarian Assistance. From the Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Jeff LeBane, Director General, International Relations.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), The Committee resumed its examination of the situation in Kosovo. (See the Minutes of Proceedings of March 31, 1999, Meeting No. 111.)

Jim Wright, Lt-General Raymond R. Henault, Jeff LeBane and Hunter McGill each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
