Wednesday, April 28, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Turner Room of The Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel, the Acting Chair, Sarmite Bulte, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Charlie Penson, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller.

Associate Member present: Sarmite Bulte; Murray Calder.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the BCT•TELUS: Willie Grieve, Vice-President, Regulatory Service; John Makaryshyn, Government and Community Affairs. As Individual: Professor Rolf Mirus, Director, Centre for International Business, University of Alberta; Prof. E.J. Chambers, Director of the Western Centre for Economic Research; Elizabeth Smythe, Concordia University College of Alberta. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings, of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73).

Willie Grieve, from BCT•TELUS, made a statement and, with John Makaryshyn, answered questions.

Rolf Mirus and Elizabeth Smythe made statements and, with E.J. Chambers, answered questions.

Jim Edwards and Shawna Vogel, from Economic Development Edmonton, made statements and answered questions.

Garry Benoit, from the Canadian Dehydrators Association, made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:50 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:12 p.m., the sitting resumed.

John Murray, from Alternatives North, made a statement and answered questions.

Jan Slomp and George Calvin, from the National Farmers Union, made statements and answered questions.

Garry Leithead, from the Alberta Forest Products Association, made a statement and answered questions.

At 2:52 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:03 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Dr. Raj Pannu, from the New Democratic Party of Alberta, made a statement and answered questions.

Elizabeth Reid and Dr. Bill Blanchard , from Alberta Friends of Medicare Society, and David Parker, from Edmonton Friends of the North Environment Society, made statements and answered questions.
