Thursday, March 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in the Bicentennial Room of the Fredericton Inn in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the Acting Chair, Sarmite Bulte, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Bob Speller, Darrel Stinson, Daniel Turp.

Associate Member present: Sarmite Bulte.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From McCains Foods: Arnold Park, CEO; Michael Campbell, General Counsel; Richard Barlett, Executive Vice-President; Alan Walker, Purchasing Manager; Yves Leclerc, Senior Agronomist; Heather Mullen, Associate Counsel. From the National Farmers Union - New Brunswick District Board: Conrad Toner, National Board Member; Darrill McLaughlin, Member. From the New Brunswick Milk Board: Robert Speer, Second Vice-Chairman; Stephen De Merchant, Director; Albert Neill, Director; John Schenkels, Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73.)

At 9:07 a.m., Arnold Park made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:13 a.m, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:17 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Conrad Toner and Darrill McLaughlin each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:15, the sitting was suspended.

At 1:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 1:07 p.m., Robert Speer made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 2:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
