Meeting No. 107

Wednesday, March 24, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in "Baronet 1-2-3" Room of the Hotel Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Acting Chair, Sarmite Bulte, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Bob Speller, Darrel Stinson, Daniel Turp.

Acting Member present: Wendy Lill for Svend Robinson.

Associate Member present: Sarmite Bulte.

In attendance: From the Parliament Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: As individual: Gilbert Winham, Professor, International Trade, University of Dalhousie; Hugh Kindred, Professor, Law School (Trade), Dalhousie University; Brian Russell, Professor, Business School, Dalhousie University; James McNiven, Professor, Public and Business Administration, Dalhousie University; Anna Lanoszka, Ph. D. Student, Accession (Agriculture); Mike Bradfield, Professor, Economic Department, Dalhousie University. From Oxfam Canada: Brian O'Neil, Program Coordinator. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73.)

At 9:10 a.m., Gil Winham, Hugh Kindred, Brian Russell, James McNiven and Anna Lanoszka each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:13 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 1:38 p.m., Mike Bradfield made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 2:16 p.m., Brian O'Neil made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 2:30 p.m., Penny McCall Howard and Ian Sharpe each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 3:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
