Meeting No. 101

Tuesday, March 16, 1999

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:41 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Bernard Patry, Charlie Penson, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Members present: Deepak Obhrai for Bob Mills; Raymonde Folco for Hon. Sheila Finestone; Sarmite Bulte for Jerry Pickard.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Daniel Dupras; James Lee; Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers; Chris Maule and Roy Hines, Consultants.

Roundtable participants: From the Canadian Steel Producers' Association: Jean Van Loon, President; Donald Belch, Director of Government Relations. From the Thomas & Davies: Serge Fréchette, Lawyer. As Individual: Donald MacRae, Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa; Howard Mann, Consultant.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73.)

Jean Van Loon, Serge Fréchette, Donald MacRae and Howard Mann each made an opening statement and, with Donald Belch, answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
