Meeting No. 85

Tuesday, May 25, 1999

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:10 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Larry McCormick, Ian Murray, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Other member present: Reg Alcock.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Denise Boudrias, Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch; Mike Gifford, Director General, International Trade Policy Directorate, Market and Industry Services Branch; Andrew Graham, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services Branch; Rick Cooper, Assistant Director General, Food Bureau, Market and Industry Services Branch.

The Committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference from the House dated March 1, 1999, relating to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000 (See Minutes of Proceedings, of Thursday, May 6, 1999, Meeting No. 82).

Andrew Graham, Denise Boudrias made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:50 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:51 a.m, the sitting resumed.

It was agreed, on motion of Larry McCormick, --That a new draft Budget be prepared by the Clerk, to increase the number of Members of Parliament for the proposed trip to Europe from 6 to 12.

At 11:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
