Thursday, February 18, 1999

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in camera at 9:09 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, Odina Desrochers, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Terry Norman, Director, Western Hemisphere Trade Policy Division, International Trade Policy Directorate, Market and Industry Services Branch; Phillip Douglas, Deputy Director, Canada U.S., Trade Policy, Western Hemisphere Trade Policy Division, International Trade Policy Directorate, Market and Industry Services Branch. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Claude Carrière, Director, Tariffs and Market Access Division; Philip Calvert, Deputy Director, Tariffs and Market Access Division. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Debra Bryanton, Director, Technical Market Access Division, International Affairs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to hold a briefing session in preparation for a trip to Washington D.C., on the upcoming WTO Negotiations on Agriculture (See House Order of December 10, 1998).

Witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:53 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
