Meeting No. 70

Tuesday, December 8, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:05 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Paul Bonwick, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, Odina Desrochers, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Jake Hoeppner, Joe McGuire, Denis Paradis, Dick Proctor and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the "Union des producteurs agricoles du Québec ": Laurent Pellerin, President; Yvon Proulx, Economist, Research and Agriculture Policy. From the « Association québécoise des industries de nutrition animale et céréalière »: D. Levasseur, Director; André Pilon, Executive President. From the Canadian Dehydrators Association: Bryan Davidson, President; Garry Benoit, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee resumed the "Take Note" Hearings on the Upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) Negotiations on agriculture -- (See Minutes of the committee of October 22, 1998, Meeting No. 50).

Yvon Proulx, Laurent Pellerin, Bryan Davidson, André Pilon made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

It was agreed, on motion of Denis Paradis, seconded by Howard Hilstrom, -- That, the Chair be authorized to request funding from the Liaison Committee for a proposed trip to Washington, D.C., of about $62,000.00 and that, he also seeks the House's authorization for the said trip, on the upcoming WTO negotiations on Agriculture.

At 11:06 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
