Meeting No. 59

Thursday, November 19, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:07 a.m., this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Joe McGuire and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses From Pulse Canada: Gordon Bacon, President. From the Canadian Seed Trade Association: William Leask, Executive Vice-President; Bruce Hunter, Manager of Product Development, Novartis Seeds, Plattsville Ontario. From the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association: Robert Broeska, President; Simon Sigal, Consultant. From the Malting Industry Association of Canada: Phil de Kemp, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee resumed the "Take Note" Hearings on the Upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) Negotiations on agriculture -- (See Minutes of the committee, of October 22, 1998, Meeting No. 50).

Gordon Bacon, William Leask, Bruce Hunter, Robert Broeska and Phil de Kemp made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:57 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
