(Meeting No. 5)

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1997

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:30 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 308, West Block, the Chair, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Leon E. Benoit, Rick Borotsik, Gerry Byrne, Murray Calder, Denis Coderre, John Harvard, Jay Hill, Jake E. Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Other Member present: Wayne Easter.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-4, An Act to amend the Canadian Wheat Board Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (See Minutes of Proceeding and Evidence of Meeting No. 2, dated Tuesday, October 21, 1997)

Robert Broeska from the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association made a statement and with the other witness, answered questions.

Paul Hetherington from the Baking Association of Canada made a statement and answered questions.

Gordon Harrison from the Canadian National Millers Association made a statement and answered questions.

Phil de Kemp from the Malting Industry Association of Canada made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:45 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:50 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

Bennett Corn from the Wiinnipeg Commodity Exchange made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

Buck Spencer and Doug Robertson from the Western Barley Growers Association made statements and answered questions.

At 5:32 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:15 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.
