The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 9:07 a.m., this day, in Room 209, West Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.


Members of the Committee present: Paul Bonwick, Rick Borotsik, Gerry Byrne, Murray Calder, Jean-Guy Chrétien, Denis Coderre, John Harvard, Jay Hill, Jake Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor and Rose-Marie Ur.


In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator.

 

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to review the Programs, Policies and Administration of the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food, in relation to Canada-United States Trade Relations.

 

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Mike N. Gifford, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services Branch and Terry Norman, Acting Director General, International Trade Policy Directorate, Market and Industry Services Branch.

 

By unanimous consent, Jay Hill give notice of a motion, to be considered at the next meeting of the Commitee, which reads as follows:

 

"I move that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food resolve to strike a joint sub-committee with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade to investigate, detail and analyze subsidization at the federal, state and local levels available to dairy producers in the United States and what farm policies in the U.S., if any, may be preventing dairy exports from Canada. This study will be undertaken in order that the Canadian dairy industry can be better prepared for the 1999 WTO trade negotiations".

 

Mike Gifford made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 10:31 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
