WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 1997

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:50 o'clock p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Roger Simmons, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bonnie Hickey, Pauline Picard, Roger Simmons, Paul Szabo and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Member present: Ovide Jackson for Herbance Singh Dhaliwal.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Nancy Miller Chenier and Laura Snowball, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From Health Canada: Ann Sunahara, Counsel, Legal Services; Paul O'Brien, Co-ordinator, Regulatory and Compliance Division, Office of Tobacco Control, Health Protection Branch; William E. Maga, Senior Policy Analyst, Health Policy Division, Health Policy, Planning and Information Directorate.

Pursuant to its order of reference from the House, dated March 21, 1997, the Committee commenced its consideration of the proposed Tobacco (Access) Regulations (SOR 96-824-02), Tobacco (Labelling and Reporting) Regulations (SOR 97-278-01) and Tobacco (Seizure and Restoration) Regulations (SOR 96-825-02).

The witnesses made a presentation and answered questions.

Joseph Volpe moved,--That the Committee approve the draft Tobacco Regulations referred to it, March 21, 1997, as amended, and that the Chair report to the House.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was carried.

At 4:13 o'clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
