The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of François Choquette, — That the Committee, before presenting its report to the House on the nomination of Madeleine Meilleur, invite the following people to appear in order to gain a better understanding of the appointment process for the position of Commissioner of Official Languages:
- The President of the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadiennes du Canada;
- Michel Doucet;
- The Boyden representative responsible for the selection process;
- The Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage;
- Mathieu Bouchard;
- Gerry Butts;
- Rémi Leger;
- The Deputy Minister of Justice;
- The Chief Human Resources Officer of the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat; and
- The Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet of the Privy Council Office.
The debate continued.
John Nater moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “Privy Council Office” the following:
“; 11. Quebec Community Groups Network;
12. La Société de l'Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick;
13. François Boileau, Commissioner of Ontario; and
14. The ten (10) final candidates”.
Debate arose thereon.
The question was put on the amendment of John Nater and it was agreed to on the following recorded division:
YEAS: Sylvie Boucher, François Choquette, Bernard Généreux, Linda Lapointe, John Nater — 5;
NAYS: René Arseneault, Paul Lefebvre, Darrell Samson, Dan Vandal — 4.

François Choquette moved, — That the Committee invite witnesses to appear in order to assess Madeleine Meilleur’s ability to perform the duties of Commissioner of Official Languages before it reports to the House on her appointment.
It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.
