The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Vice-Chair, Paul Dewar, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Anderson, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Nina Grewal, Hélène Laverdière, Romeo Saganash and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Ameenah Sawan, Teacher and Student; Heba Sawan, Teacher and Student; Jason Hunt, Officer, Government Affairs, National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces; Joshua Landis, Center for Middle East Studies, University of Oklahoma. Mennonite Central Committee Canada: Paul Heidebrecht, Director, Ottawa Office; Bruce Guenther, Director, Disaster Response. Washington Institute for Near East Policy: Andrew Tabler, Senior Fellow.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of the situation in Syria.
 

Ameenah Sawan and Heba Sawan, both by videoconference from Washington, D.C., each made a statement and, with Jason Hunt, answered questions.

 

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Paul Heidebrecht, Joshua Landis, by videoconference from Norman, Oklahoma, and Andrew Tabler, by videoconference from Prague, Czech Republic, each made a statement and, with Bruce Guenther, answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
