The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Fast, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joe Comartin, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Ed Fast, Marc Lemay, Réal Ménard, Rob Moore, Brian Murphy, Rick Norlock, Daniel Petit, Brent Rathgeber and Brian Storseth.

 

Acting Members present: Jean-Claude JC D'Amours for Hon. Dominic LeBlanc and Hon. Geoff Regan for Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Robin MacKay, Analyst; Dominique Valiquet, Analyst; Cynthia Kirkby, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Yvon Godin, M.P., Acadie—Bathurst. Fédération des associations de juristes d'expression française de common law inc.: Louise Aucoin, President; Rénald Rémillard, Executive Director. As individuals: Paul Burstein, Barrister and Solicitor, Burstein & Unger; Michel Doucet, Full Professor and Lawyer , Faculty of Law, University of Moncton; Christian E. Michaud, Constitutional-Language Rights Lawyer, Partner, Cox & Palmer.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on declaring certain groups criminal organizations.
 

Paul Burstein made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:19 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:27 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 27, 2009, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-232, An Act to amend the Supreme Court Act (understanding the official languages).
 

The Chair called Clause 1.

 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:22 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:27 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite retired Supreme Court Judges John Major and Michel Bastarache on June 17 for the first hour and the Commissioner of Official Languages, Graham Fraser, for the second hour in relation to their study on Bill C-232.

 

At 5:49 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
