FAAE Committee Meeting

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:39 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

By unanimous consent, on motion of Keith Martin, it was agreed, — That the Committee continue questioning the witnesses until 5:30 p.m. rather than going to Committee Business at 5:00 p.m. as previously agreed.

The Chair presented the Fifth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That the Subcommittee on International Human Rights maintain open and clear communications with the Committee;

That the Committee invite the following witnesses to appear in relation to the Committee’s follow-up study on Haiti: Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL), Rights & Democracy, Nicholas Galletti, John Wood, Parliamentary Centre / Program Manager, Haiti Parliamentary Support Project, Nancy Roc (journalist for Alterpresse), Issue table for Haiti (Suzanne Loiselle or Marthe Lapierre), Danielle Magloire, appropriate government officials and other witnesses as may be submitted to the Clerk’s office;

That the Committee invite Estelle Dricot, University of Laval, Institut québécois des hautes études internationales to appear in relation to a study on the situation in Burma and other witnesses as may be submitted to the Clerk’s office;

That the Committee invite Ms. Surendrini Wijeyaratne, Canadian Council for International Cooperation (CCIC), to appear in relation to the study on Afghanistan, Thursday, March 13, 2008; and

That the Committee invite Matt Waldman, Oxfam, International Policy Advisor based in Kabul, to appear in relation to the study on Afghanistan, the week of April 7, 2008.

On motion of Keith Martin, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
